Already, the border is groundbreaking. Already, the scene is notably different from the typical bulb display. Although the Sesleria is the only perennial really performing (and its compact buns are topped by dark flower tufts that might be overlooked in other seasons, but read as remarkable at this juncture), you can get a sense of Oudolf’s intricate overarching design.
But right now, the bulbs are the element holding everyone on the edge of their seats. Tulips are always a rush of adrenaline after a long winter. But surrounded in an ocean of specialty bulbs – wading in a sea of alliums, chionodoxa, and muscari – the tulips are framed. Never again will a naked planting of tulips be sufficient. From now on, tulips foiled in a frill of spiky blue/green foliage of specialty bulbs will be the gold standard.
