Now Two Years of Excitement!
The New York Botanical Garden’s
Seasonal Walk 2009 & 2010

seasonal walk and In 2008, The New York Botanical Garden invited two international garden design superstars, Piet Oudolf of Hummelo, NL and Jacqueline van der Kloet of Weesp, NL, to create a custom four-season garden installation to delight New Yorkers. Both designers are known for sophisticated plant mixes, an artist’s eye for form and color, and complex naturalized plantings that evolve over the seasons.

An Extension to Two Years

The project, with a highly naturalistic design concept that celebrates seasonality, was originally designed to be a one year installation. The Garden has been so pleased with the design, that they will keep the installation going an extra year, through 2010. Now the Oudolf-van der Kloet Seasonal Walk will spill forth an evolving continuum of flowers and foliage over 24 rather than just months. The second year promises to be even more exciting than the first as the perennials mature and change.

The Seasonal Walk Chronicles

Everyone can share in the excitement at The New York Botanical Garden, even if a trip to the Bronx is not in the cards. This online edition of the Seasonal Walk Chronicles allows anyone to experience the seasons of this spectacular landscape. The Seasonal Walk Chronicles is a year-long project designed to document the break-through design as it evolves week by week, month after month. Our chroniclers are top gardening talents Tovah Martin (writer) and Rob Cardillo (photographer). Through their eyes and observations, the Seasonal Walk comes alive for gardeners literally around the globe.

To Educate and Inspire

This website is designed to educate and inspire both landscape professionals and home gardeners. The Chronicles are augmented by useful support materials including step-by-step planting instructions, plant lists, and profiles of appealing bulb and perennial combinations.

A Collaborative Project

The Seasonal Walk Project is a collaborative effort, pooling the talents and resources of designers Piet Oudolf and Jacqueline van der Kloet, The New York Botanical Garden, and the International Flower Bulb Center. The Seasonal Walk Chronicles website is a joint creation of the Netherlands Flower Bulb Information Center/North America, Tovah Martin and Rob Cardillo.
